About StarCraft II
StarCraft II

Introduction

StarCraft II was finally announced by Blizzard Entertainment on May 18, 2007 at the Blizzard Worldwide Invitational, in Seoul, Korea. The announcement comes nearly 10 years after the original StarCraft was released, making it a sequel that is long overdue, but our wait is finally nearing its end. The game was still in pre-alpha stages at its announcement, and Blizzard will continue their policy of waiting until the game is finished to release it. As of now the release date has not been formally announced but we've heard hints of its availability in September 2008, and the game certainly appears to be well underway, with most of the Terran and Protoss units already released. Little is known of the story this time around, but it appears Kerrigan and Raynor will be included in some way. It is set to take place four years after the events of the Starcraft: Brood Wars.

StarCraft II will feature the same three races: Terran, Protoss and Zerg, all with a few returning units, and many new ones. The same balanced, fast paced gameplay will return in the same fashion, with a new look, and many new features to breathe new life into an already great game. The graphics engine, map making tool, Battle.net multiplayer support, and gameplay mechanics will be updated and fresh. Blizzard believes in focusing on a certain project or area one at a time, which would explain the long wait for a StarCraft sequel despite its success. After StarCraft was released Blizzard turned their focus toward WarCraft 3, and spent their time on the WarCraft universe. After WarCraft 3: The Frozen Throne was completed in 2003, Blizzard returned to work on StarCraft II. By all current indications, StarCraft II seems to be well worth the wait, and shows no signs of disappointing fans who have waited so long for a sequel to their favorite game. Everyone is anxiously awaiting StarCraft II, which is sure to live up to its name. Here are some of the major additions to the overall gameplay of StarCraft II.

New Units and Buildings

As time has passed since Brood War, the Protoss, Zerg and Terran have all been finding new ways to adapt to threats. StarCraft II features dozens of new units, as well as the return of some classics. New buildings for each race will also be featured in StarCraft II.

New Terrain ID System

This brand new feature will increase the interactivity between your units and the terrain. For example, certain units such as the Colossus will be able to walk up cliffs, while most units will not be able to. As of right now units firing down on enemies from a cliff will not reveal their location even when firing, as opposed to the original StarCraft where you could see an enemy shooting you from above.

High Yield Minerals

In addition to the standard resource nodes there will be patches of minerals that give players 12 ore per delivery as opposed to the 8 from normal patches. These high-yield minerals will be rare, so expect alot of fighting to be centered around these valuable minerals. High Yield Minerals will be coloured gold.

Build Queues

Workers will now be able to set a build queue, which will make them automatically construct many buildings consecutivley. The player will only tell them what to build once, and they will build the specified buildings on their own without the player telling them what to do.

Destructible Doodads

Doodads in StarCraft II will now be much more interactive. They can be destroyed by any unit, and may have strategic purposes in a game. Doodads are objects such as trees that are neutral.

Linked Multiplayer Maps

Another new feature slated to appear in StarCraft II is the ability to link multiplayer maps and games, meaning that a campaign with multiple maps will now be possible on Battle.net.
